Program Note
Max Aub’s tale, The true story of Francisco Franco’s death, on which this film is based, suggests a fictitious version of the events around his death, which could not be explored at the time, as the tale was written when the Generalisimo was still alive. Now, more than a quarter of a century after Franco’s actual death, there are many more narrative options available. As a result, a story is created where imagination and fantasy prevail. Set in Mexico in the 1940s, Virgin of Lust introduces us to Ignacio Jurado, otherwise known as “El Mikado”. He is a reserved and lonely waiter in a bar where Spanish politicians in exile meet. He spends his days between the Ofelia Cafe and his collection of pornographic photographs. Everything changes when Lola, a Spanish prostitute with a certain self-destructive and unpredictable tenderness, bursts into his life. A sadomasochistic relation develops between them. “El Mikado” will do anything in order to gain Lola’s love ... even kill Franco.
