Program Note
Mist is based on one of the short novels by Kim Seung-oak, well known for his sensitive descriptions of the 4.19 generation and his modernist literary style. Kim Soo-yong’s approach to cinematic modernism in this adaptation is accomplished with the use of flashbacks, montage, and creative sound. Yun Ki-joon, a financially successful man in the modernized city of Seoul takes a short tip to his hometown, Moojin. This film was edited back and forth between the past and the present in consciousness of paradigm forms Ki-joon’s mixed up feelings. Ki-joon is given the opportunity to look back to his past, but he can’t reach any conclusion for himself. His experience with modernism is merely a repetition of the routine or ambiguity like the mist in Moojin. Depicting the scattered consciousness of the modernist subject with a style of cinematic modernism puts Mist into the category of ‘modernism text’. (Park Ji-yeon)
