Program Note
Kim Ki-duk′s 10th film is about two high school girls, Yeo-jin and Jae-young, who turn to prostitution to make money for a trip. Their prostitution is everything but normal, yet Jae-young accepts each man with a holy smile. After Jae-young dies in an accident, Yeo-jin has sex with all the men Jae-young had slept with, and returns their money. Yeo-jin′s father is traumatized by his daughter′s plight and sets out on a spree of vengeance. This strange film is filled with difficult questions. Is prostitution a sinful act, or a disgrace? Why does Yeo-jin counteract all the acts of her dead friend? Is it to save her sinful friend or to take revenge on the men? Should the father stop her from doing such acts or encourage her? Where is the father′s rage coming from and how can it be addressed? Although simple in style, the film is full of internal tensions. The actions of the characters seem to be determined by the weight of their fate. The film throws religious questions of sin, punishment and salvation through a secular act of juvenile prostitution.
