Program Note
Three... Extremes is the second omnibus horror film directed by three filmmakers from Korea, China, and Japan, following Three in 2002. Park Chan-wook′s Cut is about a brutal happening caused by an unfortunate criminal who breaks into a house. Dilemmas between family love and bumanism and trust and adultery are depicted in the conmics of classes. Anxiety of the bourgeois is painted with nightmares. Box by Takashi Miike features a heartless murder. The murder roots from jealousy between twin sIsters who work in a circus. The snowy field in the shade of blue, the weird sisters, and the hushed sounds create a dreamy and attractive image. Fruit Chan′s Dumplings realistically depicts a middle-ageds woman who is so obsessed with regaining ner youth and love that she eats an unborn child. Dumplings has the most realistic touches among the three parts. It uses sound very delicately. In particular, Christopher Doyle′s elegant cinematography is impressive.
