What happens when a Tibetan Buddhist monk leaves his home in the deep mountains of the Himalayas and encounters the outside world? The Cup takes a heartwarming approach to this
question. Young Buddhist priests Orygen and Lodo are ordinary teenagers. They doze off during meditation, play pranks on each other and cheer at World Cup soccer games. Their adolescent
impulses involve the whole temple in World Cup fervor to the extent that the temple eventually ends up buying a used TV and installing a satellite dish. But the World Cup Soccer match finals
spark a debate between priest Geko and high priest Abbot, who are responsible for disciplining the temple. Why is France competing against Brazil? What is the big deal about a cup given to the
winning team as an award? Through their conversations, Geko and Abbot begin to understand the outside world. The first ever feature film from Bhutan, this film begins with a peaceful encounter between the
traditional civilization of Tibet and western civilization. The tale of these two refugees from Tibet, Palden and Nyima, may spark political discussion on the China-Tibet conflict but it will not
outshadow their story as simple teenage boys who long for their mother. (Kim Ji-Seok)
