Program Note
The time that Yoo Young Kil entered the film industry was when Korean cinema was at its peak. His second film as a cinematographer in 1969. Jar-Making Old Man, is a literary film about the collapse of the family and its reconciliation. Old man Song is a potter who lives alone makings jars, when he discovers revives Ok-Su who is finds lying unconscious in the snow. Eventually they marry but tragedy hits when Ok-Su′s ex-lover appears. The dramatic images of love and hate are slightly confused by the overuse of zoom shots and the technical immaturity of the lighting, a pervasive problem at the time. However, the film′s dedication to present a realistic portrayal of the narrative truly exhibits itself as the starting point of Yoo′s aesthetics. An anecdote of the cinematographer working in the mountains on a winter′s night proves his devotion to capture a great image. He was a man of intense cinematic soul. Thirty years of fame and failure in the cinema begin from this moment. (Lee Yong-Kwan)
