Program Note
In the late 1980s, the collaboration of new directors and Yoo Young-Kil started a new wave in Korean cinema. Accordingly, the collaboration of Yoo and Jang Sun-Woo can be considered a turning point in Korean cinema. In this film, the triangular relationship among the three characters represents the thoughts, feelings, and humor of the lower class. Film critic Byun In-Shik described Lovers in Woomukbaemi as a "love play of living bodily fluids." Woomukbaemi is an imaginary place symbolizing the region between Seoul and outlying farmlands; and is neither city nor farmland. Set in this in-between place, Director Jang′s eye for detail and Yoo′s realistic cinematography elaborately present the love story of clever and naive people who occupy society′s lower class. This film can be seen as a flowering of Yoo Young-Kil′s art. (Lee Yong-Kwan)
