Program Note
In the summer of 1980, the Japanese islands were swept by cold air blown from the Pacific, hitting the village of Furuyashikimura beneath the mountains, When cold air blows down from the mountains, the village gets cold rapidly, destroying the rice crops. The camera crew of Ogawa Shinsuke joined forces with local Hanaya Yoshio to remedy the havoc wreaked by this natural disaster. Two years in the making, this film is another labor of love from the great Japanese social documentarist, Ogawa Shinsuke.
Director
Ogawa Shinsuke
Born in Tokyo in 1936, he entered Iwanami Productions and learned documentary film-making in 1960. He established Ogawa Productions with his colleaguess in 1966, making many films directed and produced by himself. Beginning in 1967, he lived in Narita (Sanrizuka) with his colleaguess and made Sanrizuka Series. In 1975 he moved to Magino and made Magino Series while cultivating rice plants. He finished Magino Village - A Tale as a compilation of his crew′s 13 years in Magino Village in 1986. Ogawa died in 1992.
