Program Note
To love and forget in the future is perhaps not important as this simple story is told with distanciation. A workaholic assassin leaves for China. A cartoonist at the same hotel falls in love with her at first sight. To keep her from leaving, he gives her an amnesia inducing drug, but without memory, she′s not the same person anymore. The cartoonist releases her and embraces death while she disappears. This film challenges cinematic experience as it borrows from science fiction and melodrama, but as it is about memory and image, it ends up not belonging to any conventions of genre. With a woman director′s point of view, this film is a new challenge to Korean cinema. The film′s imagination could be criticized for lacking national identity, yet the "personal film" is new in the world of Korean film, as well as its bold use of color, filter changes, and experimental effects. In the words of film critic Yoo Jina, this film′s attraction stems from its "non-castrated liberalness." (Lee Sang-Yong)
