Through the story of a dowser, a person looking for a vein of water, this film criticizes man’s selfish instincts, greed and evil. It is Girish Malik’s first feature. The film is set in India’s Great Rann of Kutch. Bakka, a famous dowser with special powers, is helping a team of European bird specialists build a well and pond to protect flamingos. The town’s people believe that the search for water will benefit them as well, but reality is not so. Bakka’s plan to use the excavator used by the bird specialists in his town fails, and he is accused of theft and murder. In the end, Bakka decides to look for the vein of water on his own. Director Girish Malik seems to be telling the tale of Bakka, a lonely hero enduring hardships, but is in reality making a statement: that man’s jealousy, greed and bureaucracy is destroying the social order. Sunita Ladia’s excellent photography also plays a big role in relaying the film’s main message. (KIM Ji-Seok)
