Program Note
The Selfish Giant is a modern fable about a 13-year-old boy called Arbor and his close friend Swifty. Director Clio Bernard says that he has always wanted to dramatize The Selfish Giant, the fairy tale by Oscar Wilde that inspired the film. In the story, the selfish giant drives children out of his garden and they are deprived of their playground. In the film, the two boys, who have been expelled from school and alienated by neighbors, meet the selfish giant Kitten and start collecting scrap metal, using a horse and cart. Swifty is a gifted horse rider while Arbor, who is at the level of Kitten, works hard to win his favor and earn money. However, as Kitten comes to prefer Swifty, it hurts Arbor and drives a wedge between the boys. As Arbor becomes greedier and more exploitative, they become more estranged from each other and tension builds, leading to a tragic event that impacts them all. (Jay JEON)
