Program Note
The man has one dream: to make his son into a prosecutor. Though he is working himself to the bone at a swanky restaurant, he feels that his son going to law school and becoming a prosecutor will make it all worth it in the end. That’s how he justifies it to himself as he hurts his son to realize that dream. In Korean society, it was a tremendous source of pride to have a son go to law school, pass the bar and become a prosecutor. At least it is for Abbi. The problem lies in what he must do to get there. The man in this film has no qualms about committing crimes for his son. When he finds out his son is dating a call girl, he makes horrible threats to break them up. The son does become a prosecutor, but then takes revenge by charging his father for his crimes. Abbi asks what must be done to a father with blood on his hands for what he believes is for his family. His sin is too great to be forgiven just because he is the father. Abbi portrays the son’s desperate struggle to overcome his father. (NAM Dong-chul)
