Program Note
Two brothers try to break free of the gang life, only to be attacked in retaliation for their decision. The younger brother is seriously burned and dying in a hospital, which drives his older brother to take vicious revenge. In the course of his cruel actions, the enraged brother kills the gang members one by one by tying dynamite to their bodies and detonating it. Dynamite Man is a low-budget action film alternating between short powerful action sequences and long dialogue sequences. The film overturns the conventional wisdom that scale matters in action movies, and it is also novel in creating personalities with depth through its long conversations. The story culminates with the lengthy conversation between the older brother, who became the incarnation of revenge, and the priest who spent time with the brothers during their childhood. The priest tries to stop the angry brother from taking revenge, while the man suffers from pain in the course of it. At the end of the dreamy conversation, the man’s retaliation heads toward its grand finale. (NAM Dong-chul)
