Program Note
This music documentary, which unfolds against the background of a beautiful landscape of Peru, starts with the song of an indigenous woman enjoying the harmony of nature and soul. The film then follows the voyage of diverse Peruvian musicians including city dwellers. Much of the time the film alternates between the lives of two of Peru’s best violinists as they prepare for the “festival of water”. The film allows the audience to feel the spirit of music in Peruvians through the humble and sensitive daily life of those who have been friends of nature. In the latter part of the film, the camera turns towards Lima to show more modern musicians who play music and sing on the street and in clubs. For Peruvians, life equals to music, songs and dance, and this is evident in the universal humanism which can be found in every person we meet in this film. The documentary, with its sad songs and tunes of string instruments resonating throughout the magnificent landscape, will touch the audience’s heart as it also chronicles Peru’s search for its own soul and identity through its diverse people and their personal stories.
