Program Note
A science-fiction thriller set in the near future, 2030 introduces those living in southern Vietnam where global warming has impacted the land. While thematic images of water, the horizon and sea burials reveal a unique lyricism, Sao’s struggle to investigate the truth of her husband’s death is interwoven with a love triangle as the film shifts between the past and present. Although conventions are used to depict a dystopia, the film still embraces the reality of Vietnam. The flooded land and boathouse life is not so different from the southern landscape destroyed by flooding. And the big multinational selling genetically modified organisms developed by Sao’s ex-boyfriend reflects the present Vietnam, where corporate capital is rushing in. Perhaps this is why the original title n??c carries the dual meaning of water and nation. The lives of these people are vulnerable and constantly responding to great environmental change. The camera angles, tilting and rolling to the rushing currents, and the panoramic shots alluringly capture the life and death of these people living dangerously on the edge. (CHO Hyeyoung)
