Program Note
A feminist film about a middle-aged woman alienated from her family and society, who comes to self-realization as a woman, but must struggle with an unchanging reality. Ling works as a seamstress in a factory. Her husband works in China and her daughter has left home. She also takes care of her hospitalized mother-in-law. One day, an intensive care patient is admitted next to her mother-in-law after losing his vision. Out of sympathy, Ling tends to him and slowly begins falling for him. Director Chienn Hsiang details the psychological changes of a lonely woman abandoned by her husband and daughter. Ling has always believed that her loneliness was fate, but is slowly angered by their betrayal and indifference. As she cares for the patient in the hospital, her desires as a woman awaken. It’s also the moment she realizes she is a human being with emotions. And though her circumstances don’t change, she musters up the courage to escape from the restraints she has placed upon herself. Ling is superbly portrayed by Chen Shiang-chyi. (KIM Ji-seok)
