Program Note
Abbas Kiarostami′s Ten (2002), portrays 10 conversations that occurred in a single car. Surprisingly, the cramped interior of the automobile reflected the wide and varied affairs of the world on the outside. Four years have passed since that film. Mania Akbari, the heroine of Ten, now appears in the sequel. Just like the previous film, the camera watches as she takes the driver′s wheel. But there is one difference: Akbari is fighting cancer. Chemotherapy has taken her hair and also the strength to continue driving. She moves from the driver′s seat to the back seat, and the car takes her to the mountains for fresh air, or to the hospital. As she fights her illness, Akbari reflects upon her life and the lives of other around her.
10+4 is not exactly a sequel to Abbas Kiarostami′s Ten. Instead, it is more of a behind the scenes ′making of′. If Ten is a mockumentary that presented fiction in the style of reality, then 10+4 is a documentary about fiction entering reality. Although she is conscious of Ten, Mania Akbari cannot erase the reality of the cancer that is constantly ravaging her body. (Kim Byeongcheol)
