Program Note
Chouga is new film by Darezhan Omirbayev that depicts the two faces of love in a heartbreaking way. Chouga, a beautiful thirty year-old from Astana visits her brother in Aimaty to help save his marriage. She meets Albai, the boyfriend of the sister of her sister-in-law, who is young and attractive. They soon fall in love and Chouga abandons her husband and 7-year-old son in pursuit of her love.
Their love seems ever-lasting but soon withers and Chouga falls into despair experiencing the emptiness of her life. Finally, she takes and extreme measure. On the other hand, Altynai, who was abandoned by Albai, marries Tleguen, bears a child, and leads a happy life. The contrast between the lives of Chouga and Altynai emphasizes the cruel fate and irony of love.
