Program Note
The elder sister who went to Tokyo to become an actress has come back home for her parents’ funeral. Her brother and younger sister seem uncomfortable. Her brother’s wife is immature and clumsy. What is happening to the family? Their secrets are revealed one by one. The younger sister draws comics based on the life of the elder sister, so the elder sister torments her younger sister any chance she gets. Moreover, there is a strange heat between the brother and elder sister. The younger sister also has a secret unknown to the family. In short, the film is about an inexplicably strange family struggling amongst one another. Even so, they remain a family at the end of the film. Daihachi Yoshida directed the film about this 21st century family using a brilliant plot with consistent pleasant visuals that makes us look forward to his next film. Among the great performances of all the main characters, Aimi Satsukawa, who played the role of little sister, displays a stunning performance. Meticulous direction, unexpected discoveries and realistic acting work in harmony to lead the audience to a surprising ending. A superb work of cinema from Japan this year and the choice of Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival. (KWON Yong-min)
