Program Note
One of India’s top storytellers, Mani Ratnam directs an epic drama starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai; it is a unique Bollywood movie about dance, song, and an enterpriser. Gurukant Desai is a man from a small village who dreams of becoming a great entrepreneur. Despite his father being against it, he never gives up his dream and continues to strive for success. He meets Sujata, gets married to her, and starts a new business with her and her brother. However, his success came with a price; his acts of corruption are revealed to the press and his business falls in danger. Ratnam’s narrative art of Gurukant’s ambitions and despair remains outstanding. Composer A. R. Rahman, who had worked with Ratnam for many years, adds his magic of music perfectly fitting to the solemn mood of the epic drama. (Kim Ji-suk)
