Program Note
LEE Kang-Sheng, aka the persona of the famed director TSAI Ming-Liang, returns with his second film, a 2004 PPP project. Ah Jie, a stock investor, loses everything he has in the stock market. He grows marijuana and spends all day alone in his apartment. One day, upon deciding to commit suicide, he calls a hotline for help, and receives solace from volunteer operator Chyi. He falls in love with her voice, insists that they meet, but gets rejected. He goes instead to Shin, a betel nut stall girl, and seeks sexual gratification in place of Chyi. However, everything turns out to be a big mirage. Just like in his former film, The Missing, Lee deals with dark subject matter but brightens his film once in awhile with odd humor. The reinterpretation of the place that represents fantasy and the alienated person’s psychological state is impressive.
