Program Note
A philosophical essay written in visuals. The pioneer in Chinese queer cinema, Cui Zi’en, talks about carnal instinct from a philosophical point of view in allegory form. Physical liberation is the way to true freedom. Xiao Shao thinks he owns the biggest house in the world because all the land below the sky is his house. He meets Xiao Chao, Nuo Nuo, and Mao Mao who agree to his idea. He has a physical and mental relationship with them. They seem to practice the ideas of Lao-tse and Chung-tze in their lives but ironically seem far from reality. Director Cui Zi’en criticizes present-day China, which is ruled by materialism and ridicules the social oppression on sexual identity to talk about the unity of the body and mind. That is why the conversation among Xiao Shao and his friends is all the more interesting.
