Program Note
Life is full of riddles we cannot solve. Movies, at times, give us a better understanding of life by showing causal relations in life that are unknown to the characters - from an omniscient point of view. The Sun Also Rises unfolds four different stories one by one. However, the characters in each story are interrelated ? a unique mother and son relationship, a love triangle, a man mistaken for a sexual molester, an unfaithful wife, and a wedding in the Gobi desert of the past that reveals all causal relations of the characters.
Characters accept what happens to them without knowing what it means, why it happens, what result it brings, and what relation it has with people they don’t know. Certainly, the director and the audience know it all with their omniscient point of view, but there’s more to it than that. Things happen in the film that even the director cannot explain. It is like the blank space in a painting. (Kim Ji-suk)
