Program Note
With his feature debut, Tears of the Black Tiger, rising Thai director Wisit Sasanatieng was said to have created the "Tom yam gung Western". His next film, Citizen Dog, displayed a buoyant and fanciful imagination. With these two films, Sasanatieng has emerged as the talent to watch in Thailand. In his third film, The Unseeable, he returns to a more traditional approach to filmmaking. The Unseeable tells a story of love and horror, set in a giant manor in 1930′s Thailand. Nualjan is a fully pregnant woman who has come from the countryside to look for her missing husband. She briefly stays at a large manor, but there is an eerie gloom that hides in the beautiful house and colorful garden. This gloom is largely reflected by the owner of the manor, Madame Ranjuan, who never leaves her bedroom. Instead, she controls the manor through Ms. Somjit, the housemaid. At the height of Nualjan′s uneasiness, she gives birth. What is the truth that Nualjan finds in the strange manor? What fate awaits her and her newborn child? Seneewongse uses and combines a wide variety of horror genre conventions, yet he is also able to delicately portray the delicate shades of each woman′s mind. More than just horror, The Unseeable offers deep portrayals on the themes of love, loss, and obsession. (Kim Byeongcheol)
