Program Note
Set in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, Tuya is leading a hard life, burdened with the sole responsibility to make a living for her family since her husband us paralyzed as a result of attempts to drill wells for water. Her burden comes close to being unbearable and Tuya learns that she has a dislocated lumbar, complication from her hard labor, and risks paralysis herself. Faced with harsh reality, Tuya and her husband decide to divorce so that Tuya can seek a better life with a new husband who could also take care of her children. Portraying the harsh livelihood of the backward areas of Mongolia with a simple plot, director Wang Quan An′s 3rd feature film, Tuya′s Marriage, introduces the macro reality of people whole quietly make their way through the severe weather in the dried plains. No one in the film violently expresses true feeling but it′s very clear that they suppress their feelings and desires in order to survive; all of these emotions are carved in deeply to the expanse of the plains. There′s no way to compromise with morals and ethics for them; morals and ethics are luxuries that we in modern cities take for granted. Just to survive and to be survived means everything to them, their earnest desires to survive shows us both the dignity and obscurity that a life could have. There are moments of farce and pathos but none is contrived. This film could be a prominent example for how a film can a story that directly connects to the scenery itself.
