Program Note
Royston Tan who introduced ‘Getai,’ a unique part of Singaporean culture in his film 881, now interweaves Getai and a woman’s unfortunate life in 12 Lotus. While emphasizing the qualities of musicals such as colorful costumes, group dancing, and music, Royston’s brilliant imagination mixes reality and fantasy to produce a Singaporean Getai film that is different from Western musicals. Young Lian Hua’s dream is to become a Getai singer and to sing the song 12 Lotus onstage. Her father, who says that pain and love is the same, wonders how she could even dare to understand the song. Lian Hua responds that she will understand as she grows up, and her answer becomes a prophecy to her unfortunate fate as she experiences love and betrayal. (Mina OAK)
