Program Note
Just like some previous works of Majid Majidi, this film also focuses on the theme that people in difficulty realize the meaning of life when they try to overcome their problems. This time, the film centers on a middle-aged man who has to find his lost ostrich and fix his daughter’s broken hearing aid. Karim is fired because he loses an ostrich while working at an ostrich farm located in West Tehran. Karim, of course, needs to worry about his family’s future, but most of all, he is worried to death about a broken hearing aid of his oldest daughter who will take an exam next month. Karim goes to the city to fix it and accidently finds a job as a motorcycle driver. However, he soon faces a situation where his conscience may be tested. The charm of Majidi’s films comes from his innocent and friendly characters; Karim is one of them. Majidi sets Karim in a difficult reality and illustrates how he smiles, cries and screams. At the end, as always, he makes the audience smile. (KIM Ji-Seok)
