Program Note
Reiko, suffering from sudden memory loss, is informed that she actually has a brain tumor and just one week left to live. Her family, which has drifted apart both physically and emotionally, is shocked by the news and decides to make a change. Her husband is deep in debt due to a waning business, her eldest son learns of the conception of his first child but is still haunted by a painful past, and her youngest son left home for university and has very little contact with the family except his mother, all come together for their last chance to help Reiko. Ishii Yuya’s Our Family is a composed and warm contemplation of the meaning of family and how
family in the modern sense can and must be rethought in the absence of a mother who discreetly worked hard to hold her family together, and of a family’s effort to fill the gap left by such an absence. (KIM Byeongcheol)
