Program Note
In the village, in a small house by the river, an old man lives with his granddaughter. They live a simple life in harmony with the extensive nature. One day, the man’s daughter, living in the city and doing everything in order to survive in an hostile social environment, comes home and asks him to sell a house and move to live with her in the city. The old man hardly decides to move with granddaughter to the city but the daughter already lost all money and nowhere to stay together. Being in desperate, the family now comes to face the moment of choice, as nothing they can do. This film is the latest film of Marat Sarulu, who represents the Kyrgyzstan cinema and also visited Busan last year for the special program, The Unknown New Wave Central Asian Cinema. Throughout the tragic journey of a family, the director bitterly portraits the current status of the society, and with contrasting the vast nature and the dilapidated city, following the family’s agony with restrained and gazing eyes, this stirring film eventually leaves heartstrings tugged.
