Program Note
The latest feature from one of China’s leading filmmakers from Sixth Generation is an extraordinary, realistic expose of the dark shadows of history and social reality drawn over the daily life of Chinese society. Zhong Lu plays Deng, a stubborn widow in her 70s who works hard to take care of her aging mother, her two sons and grandson. Her eldest son, daughter-in-law and her youngest son - who is gay - find her overbearing. The family’s peace starts to crumble when they receive a strange call with no one on the other line. The call forces Deng to look back at her life and recall a 40-year-old mistake made during the Cultural Revolution at a Guizhou factory, and when a young boy comes to see Deng, her dark past finally surfaces. Through the dual perspectives following the daily routines of Deng in her 70s and her point-of-view, the film reveals the dark truth and scars of China’s modern history, which has infiltrated the ordinary lives of ordinary people. A history that does not forget is always a reality. (KANG Naeyoung)
