Program Note
In the outskirts of metropolitan Tehran, Iranian as well as Afghan employees work in a shabby factory. Marona lost her mother and house to a bombing in Afghanistan then fled to Iran with her father, a former soldier. She falls in love with young Iranian man, Saber, who also lost his father and works at his uncle’s factory. An old container is the small asylum that protects them from a conservative and repressive world. Though they have little to offer one another they throw themselves into a secret love. When her father is found to be an illegal worker, they are forced to go back to Afghanistan. In spite of the film’s praise of pure love, the social context is heavy given that it is based on a true story. War or conservative societies were not the lovers’ choice, but they suffer from what they are not responsible for. That’s why their love shines brighter. The dramatic tension maintained to the film’s conclusion almost casts doubt on the idea that this is really Mahmoudi’s first feature.(PARK Sungho)
