Program Note
The film begins with a scene of a Korean woman named Kwon reading pages of letters from Mori,a Japanese man. The letters are scattered on the ground with mixing timelines, which is also the case with the storyline of this film. Mori comes to Korea to meet with Kwon, with whom he dated two years. He stays at a guesthouse in the neighborhood where Kwon lived, but the woman does not show up. Mori frequently visits a cafe with a name meaning “Hill of Freedom,” where he acquaints himself with Youngsun. After Mori saves her dog, the two become closer. In the meantime, Sangwon has a dubious position at the guesthouse. He likes to meddle in the guests’ business and tries to get close with Mori, who finds his life in Seoul being filled with the encounters with everyone but the woman he wants to see. And in the process, the familiar principle involving cause and effect begins to be tangled up, creating the magic of time that can only be realized in the works of Hong Sangsoo. (NAM Dong-chul)
