Program Note
Olfat lost her husband young and had to support her elderly mother and take care of two children by herself. In a peaceful village, the two kids grow up knowing joy, and they mean everything to her. On the day the Iran-Iraq War breaks out her son decides to volunteer on the front line. Leaving only a note, he departs without saying a word to Olfat. Then she waits for her son for seven years, with news never arriving. Worrying about whether or not he has been captured in Iraq, she carries a radio
on her waist all the time. Then she hears news that her captured son has been released. Track 143 doesn’t directly depict horrible scenes of war or the discipline of combat, but it reveals the destructive process of war that destroys personal and family happiness; all the characters indeed are vulnerable. However Olfat endures the pain and doesn’t give up hope. Then she embraces. For that, the cross editing of the rendezvous scene at the end is stunning. (PARK Sungho)
