Program Note
Representing films labeled Asian Extreme, Japanese director Sono Sion’s new film is based on the popular manga series Tokyo Tribe 2 by Inoue Santa. Set in a futuristic, alternate Tokyo, the film is about the brutal and violent territorial war between the different tribes of Tokyo portrayed in a dynamic and comical way through a combination of hip hop, rap battle and musical conventions. The highlight of the film is the rap battle at the finale between the two main characters, Mera and Kai. With a cast comprising rising star Suzuki Ryohei, athlete turned actress Seino Nana, popular rapper Dais Young as well as other real hip hop artists, famous tattoo artists and stunt performers, director Sono makes a rebellious move to create the truly outrageous and exhilarating street-fighting action that many fans are desperately waiting for.
