This film traces the journey of two Thai boys from disparate backgrounds on their search for answers in religion. Seven-year-old reality show participant William becomes an overnight star and then continues to pursue his dream of becoming a Buddhist monk at a mountain temple during school break. Eleven-year-old Bundit, an alpine region ethnic minority, has trouble dealing with the strict rules of his Buddhist boarding school. He sees his family for the first time in five years on the same break. For their education, the two boys are instructed to pursue the opposite of what they know. For Williamthat means self-control, for Bundit it is freedom. However, what they end up learning is that their desires and dreams do not always align, and that happiness may need to be sacrificed. Such realizations are hinted at through images of traditional illustrations recounting “The Tale of Sakka and Pura.” The camera’s unobtrusive distance respects the children as individual beings and transforms a plain coming-of-age story into a unique learning space where it is the children who impart the wisdom of life.
