This is the debut feature by Diep Nguyen Hoang, a producer on Phan Dang Di’s Bi, Don’t be Afraid (A Window on Asian Cinema, BIFF 2010). Huyen is a student in Hanoi, who decides to have an abortion. Her boyfriend’s income is low and he hides away after losing what little he had on cockfighting. It seems a difficult, if not impossible, task to collect enough money for the operation until she finds an opportunity in prostitution with help from her best friend. Hoang, who has a fetish for pregnant women, becomes her only client. As she meets him again and again, she encounters an unexpected happiness that plunges her into emotional chaos. The director contemplates realistic and sometimes extreme difficulties that the characters have to face, who don’t have evil intentions but who lack a sense of responsibility for consequences. These difficulties are especially common in young cities. The message is effectively delivered by brave camerawork that captures images that are not idealized or beautified, but seem to be realistically reconstructed, which brings veracity to the film.
