Based on a true story, Dearest is about the sensitivity, complexity and indelible pain of child abduction. In July 2009, Tian Wenjun, the owner of a small Internet cafe in Shenzhen, finds his three-year-old boy Pengpeng missing. He and his estranged wife, Lu Xiaojuan, desperately look all over the country, and finally find their son in a small Anhui village in 2012. However, their son does not remember them and a widowed woman, named Li Hongqin who raises their son, believes Pengpeng is her husband’s son by another woman. She is also raising a girl named Jifang, and she claims the girl was an abandoned child but she took in. With her husband gone, and no one to solve this mystery, Li Hongqin struggles to keep her children. Director Peter Chan raises not only the issue of child abduction, which is a prevalent social issue in China, but also the question of what happens once the child is found, as we look at both sides of the story. Does the law do justice for those harmed? Who is to blame? (KIM Ji-seok)
