Hong Kong is a city of strange mixtures; the past and the present, of East and West. To Fruit Chan, this duality of the city never fails to bring out an artistic inspiration. <b>Hollywood Hong Kong</b> too, is about the city′s duality--and the changes after its return to the Mainland. "Hollywood" is the name of a building erected in the middle of a shantytown, and it symbolizes American culture. However, all that the people at the shantytown can do is to dream of a better future. An obese man who runs a Barbecue Pork Shop, his two equally fat sons, and a young gangster meet a sensual prostitute from the Mainland named Tong Tong and become infatuated. After the four of them sleep with her, horrible incidents follow. It seems that Chan remains uneasy over Hong Kong′s return to the Mainland. As he claims in a recent interview, he wants to explore the effect the handover had on Hong Kong. This film is part of this exploration, using a prostitute as a metaphor. The young gangster and a man with the same name search for their hands, cut off by thugs working with Tong Tong. The two men eventually find the hands, but they are mixed up, and the two must live with only one hand. Such scenes and metaphors show that the director retains his wonderful sense of satire.
