Program Note
This film sharply captures and portrays the severance and communication gap of a family. A son is about to leave for volunteer work in Africa and his mother wants to have a farewell party with all family members together but her husband never shows up. As the title indicates, the original title of the film must be a metaphor for severed family members. In fact, knowing the storyline of the film is useless to appreciate this reflective film because there is no such dramatic event. Minimizing the narrative, the film just gazes at all incidents happening in and out the house. The camera seldom comes close to the objects, keeping a distance from it with long shots and long takes. As a result, this film reminds us of a work of Hou Hsiao-hsien but the delicate sense of directing in using natural sounds and employing images like paintings of Gogh is far better than works of Hou Hsiao-hsien. Although keeping a reflective distance, giving a feeling of closeness to the film is an enigmatic attractiveness of this film. (JEON Chanil)
