Program Note
A remote village perched on the hills of Calabria, southern Italy. An old goat herder collects dust from the church floor and drinks it in his water every day, believing it will cure his illness. One day, the old man passes and a baby goat is born. The goat narrowly escapes danger while grazing in the woods but, a majestic fir tree meets its destiny and is cut down. [The Four Times] is a story of the revolving cycles of life and nature, exquisitely told without any dialogue. It stirred up a sensational response in the Director′s Fortnight at the Festival de Cannes. Humorous and pre-modern circumstances arise in a feast of colorful sounds and rhythm of the nature. The director takes creative approaches in telling a story on successive lives without putting more emphasis on any one of the four elements of nature ? human, animal, plant and mineral. A great oeuvre not to be missed. (RHEE Soue-won)
