Program Note
A musical romantic comedy depicting the events that occur in the process of putting on Mozart’s Opera buffa, [Cosi Fan Tutte] on stage. The title translates, ‘thus do they all(women)’, mocking the fact that a woman’s heart cannot be trusted.
Like the opera, the film lightly and wittily dramatizes one facet of affection by discussing the topic of love and trust between people: man-woman, man-man, woman-woman. The producer and director of the opera is Adam, who is a rich industrialist claiming to be a cultural enthusiast. As people gather one by one for the production and rehearsal begins, the film gradually starts to replicate Mozart’s opera.
This is a beautiful film fusing well three aspects ? the storyline, the setting and the singing. Compared to [Juan], another film based on Mozart’s opera, [First Night] is completely different, it’s happier and flirtatious. The events that happen between the many characters are zesty. World-class pop/opera singer Sarah Brightman plays the conductor, showing off her acting, rather than her singing performance. (JEON Chanil)
