This Romanian new wave film by Florin Serban is one of the most impressive to emerge in quite some time. Eighteen-year-old Silviu is about to be released from 4 years of reform school. With only a few days to go, he finds out that his mother, who had left him and his brother long ago, returned to take his brother away. Mad with rage, Silviu gives up his long-awaited freedom to try to get his mother to give up her plans. He kidnaps social worker Ana to run away, and relishes in the freedom of the wind blowing his hair, the wide open road, ad his first kiss. George Pistereanu has had no previous acting background, and was chosen to play Silviu from open auditions. He plays the role of a young man in rage surprisingly well. (Jay JEON)
