Program Note
In a remote town in Mozambique where the civil war has just ended, five UN peace keepers are killed in an explosion over a 2 month period. Remaining at the scene are their berets and severed genitals. An inquiry is launched and a UN investigator, Massimo Risi, is dispatched to solve the mystery. The film blends humor with vital issues that postcolonial Mozambique faces. The result is a delightful mixture of fancifulness and originality filled with distinctive African charms. Although an European funded project, it remains primarily an African film. Underneath its somewhat loose structure, the film gives rise to sharp criticisms about society. The surprising ending with the appearance of the flamingo symbolizes the ancestors of Mozambique and its identity. A colorful film of marked individuality that will be best enjoyed through heart.
