Program Note
Three poor and starving beggars sing epiphany on Christmas Eve to get some food. They earn food and drinks but soon get lost in the woods on the way home. While lost, they witness the birth of Little Baby Jesus. Dazzled with this miracle, they give away everything they have. When next Christmas comes, they decide to sing again. But they soon recall the last year’s experience then start to quarrel over their gifts. Eventually they go separate ways.
[Little Baby Jesus of Flandr] is a great debut feature with a personality that mingles Samuel Becket’s Waiting for Godot and Tarkovsky’s [The Sacrifice]. This is a defiant and experimental film shot mostly in black and white and the main characters have all Down’s syndrome. While full of religious meanings and symbols such as the vow of Three Wise Men and the contrast between Angel and Demon, the film shows amazing provocation that finds the hidden meaning through the beings belonging to neither of good and evil. The opening emphasizes horizontal line and the closing shows a vertical line. They shine in grandeur and sublimity. This film was applaused in Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes 2010. (RHEE Soue-won)
