Program Note
[Mamma Gogo] is the story of Gogo, an elderly lady who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and her family’s reaction to her illness. While Gogo is continually getting herself into trouble, her son who is a film director is struggling with financial troubles after his film [Children of Nature] flops in the theaters. As Gogo’s disease progressively gets worse, her family decides that it is best for her to move into a nursing home. [Mamma Gogo] demonstrates the tragic-comical side of Alzheimer’s, and the difficulties and conflicts of the family are portrayed in a unique way in the mother and son’s relationship. Simultaneously, Director Fridriksson satirizes the political environment of his society which has affected his filmmaking ? for better and for worse. [Mamma Gogo] is a sad, yet beautiful film with many elements from the director’s own life. (Jay JEON)
