Program Note
Former successful television producer Joachim who left everything he had in Paris for America, returns home as an impresario, with a troupe of American Neo-Burlesque strip-tease performers. Touring around port cities of France, their original and fantastical show is a great success. But, Joachim faces huge problems when he loses the venue they were due to perform for the grand finale in Paris.
A feature film by France’s celebrated actor and director Mathieu Amalric, [On Tour] garnered him the Best Director Award at this year’s Cannes. Through the portrayal of a failed producer and weathered dancer, and the statement ‘show must go on,’ the film talks about desperation for art and for life. It is a homage to the art form of the stage show and by shifting the focus to what goes on behind the stage, examines the hidden side of life. In an abundance of extravagance and colorful spectacle, Amalric’s unstable and muddled up character comes across as familiar. (RHEE Soue-won)
