The second feature film by Latvian director Gatis ?mits whose lovely and intelligent debut feature [Vogelfrei] was screened at the 12th PIFF in 2007. In this witty portrayal of modern Latvian society, Lapins, suffering post-traumatic neurosis that he got from an overseas mission gets treatment at a sanatorium for 52 days. His girlfriend Inara, an alternative medicine fanatic and environmentalist, recommends him to drink a lot of water instead. Lapins, influenced by Inara, stops his prescription medicine intake, which his doctor discovers and later expels him from the hospital. Inara arranges everything so that he can stay at a quiet neighborhood apartment in Riga. Now Lapins has to finish a long army career and start a new life, adapting himself to unfamiliar circumstances. Surprisingly though, what waited for him at the quiet apartment was not a mental rest, but an encounter with unexpected people like the landlady and her policeman boyfriend Didzis, and Ervins, a bankrupt millionaire. The outstanding cinematography was shot by Sohn Soo-beom, the Korean director of the independent feature film [Make Yourself at Home]. (Jay JEON)
