Program Note
[Twice a Woman] is a feminist drama about Catherine, who, after her violent husband puts her life in serious danger one night, decides to run away with her son to start a new life under a fresh identity. She travels to the backwoods of northern Quebec, and lives as Sophie. From fear, she moves through confidence to hope.
The film is filled with memorable moments, especially between the mother and son. For example the scene where the son records his mother swimming naked in a creek makes an unexpected impact. More impressive is that the woman continues to live independently without being shaken after she meets a new man and her son leaves her to go back to his father.
Though it is a film with strong feminism ideals, it is not the kind of feminism that attacks the male as the enemy. Catherine is a mature woman who holds on to her dignity and identity, while cherishing her relationships. She does not just change her name ? she is reborn as a real woman. (JEON Chanil)
