Program Note
Bulgaria in the 1970s. A director of photography, Anton, gets his wife and their sick son to flee to West Berlin in order to cure the boy’s illness. Staying behind in Bulgaria, Anton has a promising career as a DO, working with the best film director who is also a high ranking Communist. But, without his family by his side, he feels lonely and he decides to join his family in West Berlin. The State Security Services keep a close eye on Anton as they suspect him of espionage.
Based on a true story from Bulgaria’s Cold War period, the film tells about the hardship of film-making under difficult circumstances. Through homage to Jean-Luc Godard’s [Contempt], it reminds us of the hardship the French master must have experienced making his films in the ‘60s. It also shows how the states’ control on an individual’s life affect him, and the hardship one must endure in the name of art. The director takes a humorous approach in his depiction of the State Security Services’ wiretapping and surveillance. (RHEE Soue-won)
