Program Note
Jorge is a middle - aged man in his forties who works both as a programmer of a film archive and host of a film news program at a radio station in Montevideo. After 25 year of work on a single path, he loses his job due to the financial crisis of the archive. Now he tries to do things that he didn’t have a chance to do in the past.
[A Useful Life] is a black and white feature that deals with a cinephile′s daily life and the crisis of art house films, based on the filmmaker′s experiences. It combines a calm reflection on what it means to go to the cinema, and where cinema is placed in our lives. It also suggests an open ending by contrasting the heavy and formal circumstance of the archive in the beginning, with a casual situation when headed for a newly released film at the end. After introduced at Cannes′s Directors′ Fortnight with [Acne](2008), Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Veiroj presents his second feature present cinephile′s sensibility. (RHEE Soue-won)
